Properties of the circumnuclear medium in Active Galactic Nuclei
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a classification scheme for the circumnuclear medium of AGNs based on their location in the A V −N H plane (related to dust absorption and gas absorption, respectively). We present evidence that the A V /N H ratio is often lower than the Galactic value. This is shown by the broad line ratios of a sample of intermediate Seyferts, and by the optical/X–ray ratio of line selected (as opposed to color selected) AGNs. We point out the implications for the physical properties of the absorber. A complete classification would require a third axis, related to the density of the absorber and/or its distance from the AGN.

Dust in Active Galactic Nuclei
Dust plays an essential role in the unification theory of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This review summarizes our current understanding of the extinction and infrared emission properties of the circumnuclear dust in AGNs as well as the inferred dust composition and size distribution.
متن کاملDust in active nuclei I . Evidence for “ anomalous ” properties
We present observational evidences that dust in the circumnuclear region of AGNs has different properties than in the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium. By comparing the reddening of optical and infrared broad lines and the X-ray absorbing column density we find that the EB−V/NH ratio is nearly always lower than Galactic by a factor ranging from ∼3 up to ∼100. Other observational results ind...
متن کاملOn the anomalous silicate emission features of active galactic nuclei: a possible interpretation based on porous dust
The recent Spitzer detections of the 9.7μm Si–O silicate emission in type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) provide support for the AGN unification scheme. The properties of the silicate dust are of key importance to understand the physical, chemical and evolutionary properties of the obscuring dusty torus around the AGN. Compared to that of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM), the 10μm silicat...
متن کاملDoes the Radiative Avalanche Fueling Work in Any Active Galactic Nuclei ?
Recently Umemura, Fukue, & Mineshige (1997) proposed the radiative avalanche fueling to active galactic nuclei; gas accretion is driven by radiation drag exerted by stellar radiation from circumnuclear starburst regions. This mechanism is also interesting in terms of starburst-AGN connections. We therefore present observational tests for the radiative avalanche fueling. Our tests, however, show...
متن کاملObscuration and circumnuclear medium in nearby and distant AGN
Some recent results on the physical and statistical properties of nearby and distant AGN are presented. I first discuss the properties of “elusive” AGNs, i.e. obscured AGNs which do not show a Seyfert-like spectrum in the optical. Then I present preliminary results from a detailed study of the contribution of obscured AGNs and of their host galaxies to the infrared cosmic background. Finally I ...
